Women's Volleyball falls to Big West rival

The Aggies came into the weekend needing to pick up a big win against Long Beach State to stay relevant in the chase for the Big West conference crown. Unfortunately, they didn’t get it. They did, however retain their reputation as a gritty team that doesn’t surrender anything easily.

My last impression of Aggie women’s volleyball was a match against conference power Cal Poly in which they battled and, although they ultimately lost in 4 games, refused to surrender a single point. The match Saturday evening was similar, with the Ags extending it to 5 games before eventually falling to the 49ers.

This has become a trend with the Aggies, participants in five eight-game contests throughout the 2010 season. Unfortunately, they’ve only won four out of those eight. Nevertheless, the Aggies got stellar performances from Melanie Adams and Allison Whitson, who turned in the volleyball version of a “double-double,” with 14 kills and 13 digs, and 13 kills and 11 digs, respectively.

The Aggies, currently 6th place in the Big West, go on the road next weekend to face Cal Poly and UCSB. Though the window of opportunity for a conference championship shrank last weekend, the Aggies can still finish the season with a respectable record and satisfying wins over their rivals.
