Local artist G2 has a wonderful new cd out of home recorded songs he has written in this past 3 to 4 years. I was initially engaged in "Indie" music because I viewed the style as something I could conceivably create myself. With this idea in mind, I will be exploring the "Indie" genre this week, playing many home recordings, non-chalant melodies....products of garage bliss. What is "Indie" music exactly? Is it a reaction to vulnerability, confusion, track homes, strip malls, love, gadgets, beer....? You'll be hearing my perception of the sound, style, and culture of "Indie". Daniel Johnston mural by Daniel Johnston, in the former site of the Sound Exchange record store in Austin Daniel Johnston, one of the greatest songwriters of our time, is currently being hospitalized for acute kidney failure. Despite his struggle with manic depression and bi-polar disorder, Johnston has recorded some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. This week's program will feature a comparison between "isolated" ethnic sounds of North Africa and Southeast Asia with more modern, western-inspired sounds from these regions. New releases from Nonesuch and Sublime Frequencies will be showcased. I also will be playing music from side projects of the bay area band Monopause, who are influenced by modern ethnic sounds (i.e. Neung Phak), and I will finish the program with some new Finnish free-folk.
