axial composition: poetics jottings

organization by multiple axes, thinking maximally

time/space/reference

time: music; rhythm, harmony/dissonance

space: speech not privileged over inscription; visa versa

reference: diving into the sign as well as considering materiality of sign; valences of meaning proliferated/restricted by time/space decisions

form taking Nothing for granted, including syntax, capitalization, received forms, etc; to do so is evasive, blind; and worse, harmful; supports complacency, hegemony; form Is politics

necessary organizational apparatus, delineation of fields; for instance, temporal, thematic; map on which to lay material; constructivist; move things around to enhance structural connections; sufficient structural integrity opens territories for play; city-states of language

encyclopedic array, entire world as raw material; destruction of confining expressive subject, tho can potentially draw from lyric energies; opening compositional field to individual unconscious and social collective forces; obscuring of ego by chance and method; consideration of autonomous construct / transmission; against strict divisions, fictional; promotion of integrated systems of thought (Curious reflection of logic of late capitalism)

conceptualizing the beams of constructs; blurring/foregrounding edges; sublimating, presence by absence; thinking about how one receives to make sense of things; the best work challenges/retrains ones perception

exemplary art- poetry of bruce andrews; music of anthony braxton

Should one preserve, move, modify, change or suppress:

The Arc de Triomphe?

Blow it up after burying it in a mountain of manure.

The Obelisk?

Remove it to the entrance of the Abattoir where it will be held by a woman's immense gloved hand.

The Saint-Jacques Tower?

Conserve it as it is, but demolish the surrounding quarter and, for a hundred years, forbid anyone to approach within one kilometre, under penalty of death.

The Statue of Gambetta?

Destroy it.

The Vendome Column?

Replace it by a factory chimney being climbed by a nude woman.

The Opera?

Transform it into a fountain of perfumes. Reconstruct the staircase from the bones of prehistoric animals.

The Palace of Justice?

Raze it. Let the site be covered by a magnificent graffiti to be seen from an airplane.

Notre-Dame?

Replace the towers by an enormous glass cruet, one of the bottles filled with blood and the other with sperm. The building will become a sexual school for virgins.

The Statue of Alfred de Musset?

The woman will put her hand in his mouth; people will be invited to strike him in the abdomen and his eyes will light up.

The Statue of Henry IV?

Paint the horse black. Reconstruct Henry IV in powder-puffs.

anyways... i... david d. young will sub 4 brian ang today & will be reading more stuff than i usually do such as prose or poems out of Headcase, 1999 & Tomorrow, 1988; both of these are small press mags outta chicago & beyond that i may attempt to read from phillip lamantia's 'meadowlark west' & also a friend who was the host of a circular/roundtable format poetry reading in chicago in the 1st 1/2 of the 1980s, Richard Vogt also known as Harry Lenz. Otherwise, I have a mishmosh of music & possibly other recorded spoken word to play on Brian's show... more peace & less crass materialism, whatever that entails,,,david d. young...(dec 14)

The Puritan wanted to work in a calling; we are forced to do so. For when asceticism was carried out of monastic cells into everyday life, and began to dominate worldly morality, it did its part in building the tremendous cosmos of the modern economic order. This order is now bound to the technical and economic conditions of machine production which today determine the lives of all the individuals who are born into this mechanism, not only those directly concerned with economic acquisition, with irresistible force. Perhaps it will so determine them until the last ton of fossilized coal is burnt. In Baxter's view the care for external goods should only lie on the shoulders of the saint 'like a light cloak, which can be thrown aside at any moment.' But fate decreed that the cloak should become an iron cage.

DJ Brendan and I part ways saying see you at the show. DJ Brendan crashes his motorcycle as a lion tries to get him but is fortunately unhurt. I get away on my bike. I go to the KDVS station where I realize that I am missing class. The class is Cool as Folk and is taught by Michael Leahy. But then I see Michael Leahy in the DJ booth and am confused. Michael Leahy comes out to talk to me and says yes the class started today but DJ Haggis is substitute teaching for him right now
