Tropicalia is one of the most significant cultural movements in Brazil encompassing progressive music, political thought, film, visual art and theatre all under the eye of a repressive military dictatorship. Mixing psychedelic rock, avant-garde musique concrete, samba, funk and soul, Tropicalia was so radical and its social implications so politically profound - that its leading protagonists were arrested, imprisoned and finally exiled in 1969. Today I'll bring you a crash course on the music from this amazing--albeit shortlived--musical period.
