Children are uniquely senstiive to pesticide and other environmental exposure. Studies by Dr Asa Bradman and the Children's Environemental Health Center as part of the National Children's Health Study found siginificant levels of pesticide on the clothes, and dust of farmer worker children. Another study found that DDT buildup in mother's systems transfered to their children. Tianna talks to Dr. Bradman about his work with the Center and some of his findings.
Host Emeritus Kendra Johnson is back to talk to Roosevelt Tarlesson, an organic grower in the Capay, as part of our new series, Exploring the Capay. Roosevelt shares his experiences as an immigrant farmer in California and describes the process of securing his land in Guinda.

Rory O'Dwyer and Rex Dufour talk about ATTRA, the National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service, and the recent funding cuts they've experienced. Tianna Dupont talks to Alan Forkey from the National Resource Conservation Service and Sid Staunton, an innovative farmer from Tulelake, about a Conservation Innovation Grants program called the Walking Wetlands Project. The Walking Wetlands project is a partnership between local farmers and agencies including the NRCS National Resource Conservation Service to preserve the economic viability of their farms while increasing access to wildlife habitat for migrating water fowl. As part of the walking wetlands project cropland is flooded on a seasonal basis. Flooding provides habitat to water fowl and helps farmers improve soil quality and manage pests and disease.

Tianna Dupont talks to Katharina Ullmann, California Pollinator Conservation Coordinator from the Xerces Invertebrate Conservation Society about the importance of native bees. The European honey bee is the most important single crop pollinator in the United States. However, the mysterious colony collapse as well as diseases, parasitic mites, and Africanized bees disorder are an increasing problem in honey bee hives and worrying farmers who depend on them. Many scientists and farmers believe we may need to pay more attention to native bees as honey bees decline. Katharina will explain the importance of native bees and how we can create habitats to encourage more beneficial bees.
