Public Affairs

To be proud of being an American is like being proud of being the child of wealthy parents.  I am grateful to be in an American.  I’m grateful for having had access to a good education.  I’m proud of the work I’ve done for previous communities and for KDVS and its listeners.  I’m proud of people I know and love who have overcome obstacles in their lives.  I’m grateful that I have a ready smile which people find friendly.  I’m grateful to be married to a brilliant and loving man.  I’m proud some of some of the decisions we take together.    Do you agree with the distinction which I feel needs to be made when people say they are proud of something?  Let me know by posting a comment!

While doing research to gather recordings from poets protesting the New Arizona immigration law, this scenario kept on twirling in my head.  So I had to write down.  Here it is.

Brothers

The mirror
of your sunglasses
reflects
a picture
of me.

It does not
match
what I see
every morning
when I brush
my teeth.

As you look
at me,
I stare back
and see
what you see.

You see
someone who is
not
like
you.

You see
a thief
of the life
you think
you own.

Yet
I share
more
with you
than
you wish
to see,
