What's Your Favorite Song?

By: Estefania Alvarez

Everyone has at least one song that matters. It hits that chord inside of you that just reminds you of your saddest or happiest moments. You play it on repeat until your ears bleed the lyrics, but you listen to it months later and it’s as if you just heard it for the first time yesterday. All you music nerds and cynical nihilists will probably ask why this even matters, but be honest with yourselves my fellow music lovers! Some of the songs you have passively skipped on the radio or light heartedly listen to while browsing the internet mean something. They mean something to the person who let you borrow their pencil during that Geology GE or helped you up after you tragically and embarrassingly fell off your bike (we’ve all crashed on our sweet rides, don’t even lie). Music binds us, not divides us and these songs matter:

Erykah Badu- Next Lifetime
The Velvet Underground- Oh! Sweet Nuthin’
Interpol- Leif Erickson
Friends and Lovers- Incubus

Typhoon Comes To Davis

Typhoon, a 13 person band hailing from Portland, Oregon, stopped by Armadillo Records this weekend to play an acoustic set before their headlining show at The G Street Wunderbar later that evening.  Although their set was acousitc, they still brought out their full band, cramming over 11 musicians into Armadillo. Complete with trumpets, drums, acoustic guitars, and violins, Typhoon truly filled up the store with their sounds.  They were touring to promote their new 7inch "Common Sentiments" that came out on the label Tender Loving Empire in late October.

Davis was their last stop in California before heading back up to Oregon, but make sure to check them out next time they come on through.  They put on a fantastic live show, and it's always amusing to see how they fit all their members in the venue.

You can check out their sweet tunes at http://www.wearetyphoon.com

Spotlight: KDVS DJ Ed Martin

Check out this awesome video of KDVS DJ Ed Martin that was put up on the UC Davis YouTube channel!

Anne Halo Interviews Fine Steps:

Julian Eloduy can be described as willowy. He has a strong core presence coupled with bits of softness. His guitar chimes happily through poppy, full-bodied tunes. Julian's brooding voice gives you a peek at the pain of his inspiration which casts a haunting shadow, but there's always a beautiful hopefulness that shines through. No matter how tough you think you are, we all have a weakness for love.

AH: Julian, I've seen you play in a few bands; Mayyors, Vichy Water, and The Standard Tribemen. All of them sound quite different from one another. How did Fine Steps come about?

Phono Select Mixtape Swap!

You Are What You Hear

By: Kamila Kudelska

KDVS is a valuable place, full of extraordinary characters in all areas specifically in the music scene. Most people might say that you will meet some of the characters of your lifetime in the Freeborn basement. The irreplaceable library of music that makes KDVS is what attracts the people who truly love those garage/basement bands that ensue. The renowned ability that has been found in KDVS is the faculty to play music not mainstream or popular but in an unique DJs mind educational, diverse, and challenging but overall awesome. What may be the most attracting feat of this community is each person’s passion and love for a variety of music.

But what makes KDVS so unique is the diversity of personality present. Recently NPR wrote an article about the six songs that describe who you are, essentially “you are what you hear.” By answering six questions, you are able to infer who the person is. In an effort to try to introduce the community of KDVS some of our new volunteers and current DJs and staff answered the following questions:

LAKE (Oly), Nacho Business, Yea-Ming (Dreamdate, Solo Set), Skrill Meadow

The Robot Rocket Residence (633 M) is proud to announce another great house show with some rad bands from Olympia and the Bay! Due to the touring acts there will be a $5 cover (which is way less than you'd pay to see these awesome acts in the Bay)

****there's four bands on the bill, making for extra-awesomeness, but also means that we really need to start on time! show up at 8:30 and you'll get to see all the bands!*****

LAKE (Olympia): One of my favorite indie-pop bands of the past decade, they were scheduled to play a much bigger and hipper venue in Sac. They got bitten by the house show bug and that's good news for all us Davis fans! LAKE can best be described as Fleetwood Mac meets Olympia- so naturally, lots of handclaps, tambourines and male-female harmonies.
